Enteric Coating

Shellac is a natural gastro-resistant polymer, but it will dissolve at the higher pH-levels of the intestines.

Formulated coatings with SWANLAC ASL 10 aqueous shellac solution meets the pharmacopeia requirements of acid resistance and release at pH 6.8..

The dissolution and disintegration properties can be modified by formulation with other polymers, e.g., HPMC, Na-alginates etc.

By addition of a plasticiser, the flexibility of the film can be improved. Food grade plasticisers are Glycerine, PEG 400, TEC etc.

Typical weight gain is 3%-4% for tablets, capsules & softgels. For pellets weight gain is around 20%-30%.

Taste & Odour masking

For taste & odour masking, SWANLAC® ASL 10 can be used as such or formulated with a water-soluble polymer and a plasticiser.

In many coating applications, HPMC (about 5%) is used for taste masking. This requires a higher weight gain which leads to increased coating times.

By formulating SWANLAC® ASL 10 with low viscous HPMC, the weight gain can be considerably reduced (about 1%—1.5%), compared to an HPMC coating only.

Barrier Coating

Films based on SWANLAC® ASL 10:

have a low water vapour and oxygen permeability.

are water/humidity resistant.

prevent discolouration (bleeding) due to moisture penetration.

Very smooth surface, easy to swallow and completely Natural.

Sustained release

SWANLAC ASL 10 aqueous shellac solution can be formulated for release at specific areas in the intestine.

Local and systemic prolonged delivery for targeting the lower part of the gastrointestinal tract can also be done with SWANLAC ASL 10 aqueous shellac solution. By adjustment of the formulation, release at different areas can be targeted.
